under The Streetlight

My images are themed around street safety and reclaiming spaces which women often feel unsafe. The tragic death of Sarah Everard deeply unsettled me, as it speaks to an institutional patriarchal culture of sexual assault, rape and femicide. Shooting the dark scenes of the parks and streets was the first time I had gone out in the dark since her death which was extremely empowering and liberating. It was a great to start a dialogue with the women featured about their experiences and reactions to Sarah’s death. The contrast between the bright figures shot in daylight and the murky night-time scenes represent the reclaiming of dark and quiets places. Women are often told to wear vibrantly coloured clothes to make themselves more visible, but the models are wearing their own clothes as a form of self-expression.
